Meet Our Director,
Annette Hanneman

A Heart for Care, A Vision for Change

With over 30 years of experience in the disability sector, Annette Hanneman leads Community Carers NSW with unmatched dedication and compassion. Her journey into disability support is deeply personal, inspired by her father’s life-changing stroke and subsequent diagnosis of an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Over time, as his health declined further due to dementia, Annette witnessed the profound impact that high-quality, compassionate care can have—not just for individuals but for their families as well. These experiences shaped her passion for providing meaningful support to those in need and fuelled her mission to make a difference.

A Career Rooted in Passion and Purpose

Annette began her career as a disability support worker in 1992, where she developed a hands-on understanding of the sector's challenges and opportunities. Driven to deepen her impact, she pursued a Diploma in Social Work, which opened doors to roles in managing group homes and coordinating early childhood intervention programs. Through her professional journey, Annette has continually focused on delivering person-centred, high-quality care that respects the dignity and individuality of every participant.

A Family with a Shared Commitment

Annette is not only a devoted leader but also a proud mother of two wonderful children. Her daughter and son, inspired by her example, share her passion for uplifting others and actively contribute to initiatives that make a difference. Together, they reflect the values of compassion, respect, and service that are at the core of Community Carers NSW.

A Vision for Transformative Care

The challenges Annette faced while caring for her father—first through his ABI recovery and later during his decline with dementia—instilled in her a deep empathy for carers and families navigating similar journeys. These experiences have shaped her belief in providing holistic, empowering support to participants and their loved ones. Through Community Carers NSW, she is committed to delivering services that enhance resilience, foster independence, and create a sense of connection and community.

Why Annette Leads with Heart

“Caring for my father through his stroke, ABI, and later dementia taught me the profound importance of compassion, patience, and understanding. Those years were challenging but also deeply rewarding, and they shaped the way I approach disability support today. I’m committed to ensuring every participant feels seen, valued, and empowered to live their best life.”

“My motto is you can do anything, just a little different.”
